Justin Cole, an active member of our NYS GIS community, passed away last week after battling an aggressive cancer. Justin was a past Genesee-Finger Lakes Region GIS/SIG President and long time GIS/SIG Board Member. His obituary can be found here: https://millerfuneralandcremationservices.com/obituaries/?id=2748.
There is a Celebration of Life service scheduled for this Sunday, September 27 from 1-2:30 at the Rochester Institute of Technology’s Schmitt Interfaith Center (40 Lomb Memorial Drive, Rochester, NY 14623). “The service will include reflections from family and friends, with time for anyone who would like to share a memory, story, or part of Justin that others may not have had the chance to know.” All are welcome to attend in-person or virtually through a planned Zoom link. Anyone who knew him is encouraged to share stories and pictures through the website above.
The GIS/SIG Board is planning to honor Justin’s memory and contributions to the organization and GIS education initiatives throughout the region by establishing a regional GIS scholarship in his name and planting a memorial tree in Monroe County’s Webster Park. Stay tuned for more information.
Justin was a brilliant GIS professional and his blog (https://justincolegis.com/) remains one of my favorite resources. He was a very kind person and it was an honor and a privilege to learn from him.
