New York State Esri ArcGIS Desktop K-12 GIS License

Esri K-12 ArcGIS Desktop License Web Page

The NYS GIS Association & NYIT Welcome You to the NYS Esri K-12 Free Desktop Software Program

Welcome! The New York State Esri GIS K-12 web page is a resource for those interested in learning more about GIS instruction in the traditional K-12 classroom, home-school settings and in recognized state youth groups, such as Boys and Girls Clubs, 4-H, and scouting organizations, among others. This is where educators and school administrators can request software, access free online training courses, get technical support, sign-up for teacher professional development seminars, share teaching experiences, and more. Let GIS help you share a geospatial perspective with your students!

GIS allows students to collect and visualize data about questions of interest, adding their own data to a map and performing a wide range of analyses. Students working with the GIS tools can become a valuable resource to their communities through the projects they complete.

The New York Statewide license for the unlimited use of Esri’s ArcGIS Desktop software is an exciting collaboration that benefits ALL K-12 students, educators and school administrators in New York State. It provides a complete suite of GIS (Geographic Information Systems) applications free to K-12 educational environments. Thanks to Esri’s K-12 program, ArcGIS Desktop, a state-of-the-art GIS software suite, is available to all public, charter, parochial and private schools.

This partnership, between Environmental Systems Research Institute (Esri), the New York State GIS Association and the New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) in conjunction with the New York State Teacher Centers (NYSTC) , can help educators working with K-12 aged students design learning opportunities and expose them to the high growth area of geospatial technology. Educators and school administrators should visit the Getting Started page to sign the Memo of Understanding (MOU) with NYIT and take the next step toward downloading and working with the desktop software.

If you are interested in Esri’s new ArcGIS Online (AGO) program that is available to ALL K-12 schools in the United States at no cost, go to the ConnectED page! This program was launched from the White House on 27 May 2014, and provides access to the power of GIS without downloading and installing any software. The ArcGIS Online Skillbuilder can help you quickly see how to make maps, analyze data and learn content in virtually any discipline. AGO is a great way to get started in GIS before moving on to the ArcGIS Desktop environment.
