Night Reception
Reception

Tuesday, October 23rd 6:30 - 9:30

Welch-Allyn Lodge
Skaneateles Falls, NY

The NYS Geospatial Summit Evening Reception will be held at the Welch-Allyn Lodge. Attendees will have the opportunity to mingle informally with our speakers and other Summit attendees in front of the fireplace or on the deck overlooking the pond. Enjoy hors d'oeuvres and cooked-to-order fajitas.

If your hope was to network or if you just wanted to catch up with GIS friends you made at last years Summit, then this is the perfect opportunity to take advantage of this enjoyable evening.

At the reception on the evening of Tuesday, October 23rd, we are celebrating the 50th "birthday" of GIS with the screening of "Data for Decision." This 1967 short feature produced by the National Film Board of Canada describes the development of the Canada Geographic Information System (CGIS). Dr. Tomlinson was the driving force behind CGIS and will be at the reception to answer questions about the early days of GIS. NYS GIS Association members who attend the evening reception have a chance to win a copy of Dr. Tomlinson's latest book "Thinking About GIS" and have him sign it for them. Visit the Association website for details.

Music

Loren Barrigar to Perform at 2012 NYS GeoSpatial Summit Reception
Loren BarrigarIt's said that you can find more talented guitar pickers per square mile in Nashville than in any other city.  Today you'll find one or two on any given street corner on Music Row or downtown.  It's a continuing tradition in Music City USA.  For the last six years Loren Barrigar has been invited there to perform at the Chet Atkins Appreciation Society weekend.  Loren has early ties to Nashville.  When he was young, his father moved the family there for five years so that his son the guitar prodigy could perform.  The band, called The Christophers, played on a street corner.  An invitation to play the Opry soon followed.   While living there, Loren studied guitar with Chet's older brother, Jimmy Atkins.  The family spent a year living in Las Vegas before returning to Central New York so Loren could attend high school.

Loren's first CD, "Dance With Me" won a Sammy (Syracuse Area Music Awards) in 2009 for Best Country CD.  His songs have been played on network television's ER and the Young and the Restless.

Mark Bialczak of the Syracuse Post-Standard says, "With his CD "Dance with Me", Barrigar proves that folks who live in Elbridge can brag that they've got a world-class player living in their midst". And, "On his second CD, "Chillaxin'", Elbridge native Barrigar once again sets a gorgeous mood with his vastly talented fingerstyle acoustic guitar work."

The Skaneateles Suites blog says, "On stage, he has a relaxed but energetic presence while moving easily among rock songs, old time standards and original tunes".

Larry Hoyt of WAER in Syracuse had this to say.  "Barrigar belongs on that short list of the very best local performers who can hold their own on any stage".

On Tuesday evening sit down and spend some quality time listening to this fine musician during the GeoSpatial Summit reception.
