NYSGIS Association Members,
Following up on Bruce Oswald’s original email, and as President of your Association, I want to remind you that the NYSGISA is seeking volunteers to fill three open positions on the Board of Directors and to run for President-Elect. Nominations are due by noon on Wednesday, November 6, 2013.
While we already have several nominees for the Board, and one nominee for President-Elect, we’d like more candidates to enrich the democratic process. From personal experience I can tell you that the time requirements are reasonable and there is no better way to get into the middle of State GIS issues than by becoming an Officer. It is also a great way to meet and work with a terrific team of professionals from across New York.
The NYSGIS Association has been vital to the growth of GIS in the State. From our incredible website, to our professional development webinars and conferences, network building activities and legislative initiatives, we are helping our profession and our members every day. This is your opportunity to shape the future of our organization during a time of expanding capabilities and dynamic new applications.
If you have any questions please feel free to email or call Bruce at email@example.com ; (646) 808-4070; Julie Tolar (President-Elect) at firstname.lastname@example.org ; (585)654-0724 or Alan Leidner at email@example.com ; 212-551-6416. Looking forward to seeing your name on the ballot.
Best regards, Alan
How To Become a Candidate
Candidates are requested to fill three (3) vacancies on the New York State GIS Association (NYSGISA) Board of Directors as well as the position of President-Elect. To qualify as a candidate, a person must be a member in good standing of the NYSGISA as of October 14, 2013. Each newly elected Board member will serve a two-year term while the President-Elect will serve one year in that office before serving one year as President followed by one year as Immediate Past President.
Voting for the candidates will be done just prior to the NYSGISA Annual Meeting held on Wednesday, November 13th at the 2013 NYGeoCON Conference in Saratoga Springs. The newly elected Board Members will be announced during the meeting.
The duties of a Board member include attendance at all Board meetings (typically once a month via teleconference call) as well as active participation in one of the standing NYSGISA Committees (Education, Marketing, Conference, Regional Coordination, Legislative, Communication, and Membership). Interested parties are encouraged to look through the Association’s website (http://www.nysgis.org/) and issues noted under the “News and Blog” tab for more information on recent activities. Duties of both Board Members and the President-Elect can be found in the Association’s By-Laws (https://www.nysgis.net/about/bylaws/). This is a great opportunity to directly influence GIS processes statewide and earn GISP professional contribution credit!
If you would like to be considered as a candidate for the Board or for the position of President-Elect, please email a no more than one page written statement of your interest (noting whether you are seeking a Board or the President Elect position) to Bruce Oswald at firstname.lastname@example.org by noon on Wednesday, November 6, 2013. This statement should include an explanation of why you are interested in the position and what you hope to contribute to the NYSGISA in that capacity. The subject line of your email should be entitled: NYSGISA Nominating Committee.
