Title: Optimal Calibration and processing methods for UAS-LiDAR

Synopsis: This presentation provides a brief background on LiDAR system calibration strategy and shows a successful implementation of Rigorous and Pseudo-rigorous calibration methods for a multi-beam spinning LiDAR unit (VLP-16 PUCK Hi-res) on a low altitude UAV (DJI M600). The specific calibration approaches used have the necessary rigor (by preserving the link to the sensor model) and generality in terms of data availability and type of terrain used (urban or non-urban) for the wide range of users in the LiDAR community. This presentation provides an overview of developed collection, processing, and analysis methods for UAS-mounted Velodyne VLP-16 laser scanner data. Investigation into optimal scan configurations for mission planning to provide best coverage of the area of interest is discussed, along with methods for boresight calibration and strip adjustment. To support calibration and adjustment in rural areas, useful for such applications as forest inventory surveys, portable multi-modal targets visible in both laser scanner point clouds and imagery have been developed and are described. Additionally, this presentation addresses strategies for uncertainty estimation, and accuracy assessment of the laser scanner data. To illustrate the concepts, we present case-study results of our methods, including comparison of actual and predicted accuracies based on check points and uncertainty estimation, respectively.
Biographies:

Megan Miller’s PhD research at Purdue Univ. entailed developing airborne LiDAR system calibration methods to simultaneously address raw measurement unavailability, while also preserving the sensor model and allowing usability on any type of terrain.

Ben Wilkinson is an Assistant Professor at the Univ. of Florida Geomatics Program. There, he teaches the Introductory and Advanced Photogrammetry courses, Marine Geomatics, and co-leads UF’s three-course certificate in Mapping with Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS). He is a co-author of the textbook Elements of Photogrammetry with Applications in GIS.
