For anyone who is interested in HOT disaster response, but hesitant to try it during an actual emergency, there is a project on the HOT task list, Missing Maps, which is very worthwhile but not part of the emergency response – which makes it a much better place to climb the learning curve.

Missing Maps is a Red Cross supported effort to start putting together maps of underserved areas of the world.

HOT isn’t just about disaster response; they have ongoing programs like Missing Maps that serve a couple of Humanitarian purposes – economic development through better maps, and preparedness for disasters to come.
