The company hopes to improve its trouble analysis capabilities, as well as its mobile workforce.

The geographical information system (GIS) and digital mapping technology was once an arcane field presided over by experts working on specialised applications in industries like mining exploration, public health, crime mapping and municipal planning. Today, it’s grown into a commonplace part of the IT infrastructure, used for a wide range of business planning and productivity applications across a growing set of industries.
GIS has been pigeonholed in the past as a tool for applications such as real estate, public health and sustainable development, says Etienne Louw, MD of mapIT. But the biggest growth area for the technology today lies in mainstream business applications like managing the mobile workforce.

GISCorps volunteer returns from a World Vision mission in Sierra Leone
In September 2012, Jim Tobias, a Senior GIS Developer with Northrop Grumman in Atlanta GA, was deployed to an onsite mission in Sierra Leone. The request for volunteer came from World Vision and was for a GIS/GPS Specialist to undertake mapping of health and education facilities in Area Development Programs (ADP)s within 4 districts (Kono, Pujehun, Bo, and Bonthe). Jim stayed in Sierra Leone for three weeks (9/15 – 10/6, 2012) and supported the project in a variety of ways.

3 High Quality GIS Mapping Software Products Reviewed In Detail, Boffin Announces
Software Review Boffin revealed today the top GIS mapping software products for 2013, after completing extensive testing and evaluation of each software’s features and tools. According to the Boffin team of reviewers, this final top three list is based on the current products on the market, and so is subject to change as new releases or updates are made available. The Boffin reviewers also clarified that the top software products had almost equal scores, and the final positioning was based on minuscule differences in features.
