2010 NYS GIS Association Award Winners!

The 2010 NYS GIS Association award winners were announced at the Annual Meeting and are as follows:

Award of Excellence                        Lifetime Achievement Award

Jack Eichenbaum Jack Eichenbaum– Jack was recognized for this prestigious award for his commitment to education, communication and collaboration in the New York City GIS community. In 1990, Jack founded the Geographic Information Systems and Mapping Organization (GISMO) and remained its leader through his retirement in 2005. Under Jack’s leadership, the group grew to over 700 members from city, state and federal agencies, non-profit organizations and the private sector. In 2001, this group pulled together GIS volunteers from across the region to provide assistance to the City’s efforts in responding to the attacks to the World Trade Center on September 11th.
Jack Eichenbaum is an internationally regarded expert in urban geography, real estate research and computer assisted mass appraisal. He holds degrees in physical science, social science and engineering, and has exceptional skills in research design, data analysis, and quantitative modeling.As City Assessor, he has made contributions in all phases of the computerization of New York City’s property valuation system: data collection, basic research, software implementation, programming, training, statistics. He pioneered the use of location response surfaces in valuation and helped plan a Geographic Information System (GIS) for the Department of Finance.His academic career encompasses quantitative and theoretical research on migration, ethnicity, urban growth and neighborhood change. Dr. Eichenbaum is an authority on location analysis and the location value of real estate. He has extraordinary knowledge of the geography of New York City which he teaches at the City University.Having lived and worked in Europe, Israel, Mexico as well as the United States, he adapts easily to new environments and he has conducted research in Spanish and English. He maintains international contacts among geographers, urban information system specialists and land policy professionals.

Annual Outstanding Achievement Awards

Eileen Allen Eileen Allen–Eileen’s dedication and passion as a teacher as well as her contributions to detailed wetland mapping in the Adirondacks were recognized through this award.
Craig Cleveland Craig Cleveland – Craig was recognized for his volunteerism and significant contributions to GISSIG as well his outstanding work for local counties, towns, and villages while working for Bergmann Associates.
Cattyann Campbell Cattyann Campbell – Cattyann was recognized for her vision and leadership as well as her unwavering commitment to the difference that GIS technology can make for community and staff in her previous work for the City of Ithaca and her current position with Tomkins County.
Jeff Volpe presents achievement award to Butch Conover Butch Conover (pictured left) – Butch was recognized for his enthusiasm and persistence for employing technology as the driving force behind the conversion from paper and personal memory to the development of a digital infrastructure management system for the City of Rome. Jeff Volpe, right, presents the award to Butch.

Each award winner was presented with a framed letter recognizing this achievement. In addition, each award winner and the person nominating him or her will receive a free 2011 membership in the Association for participating in the event.

The Association wishes to congratulate all its 2010 award winners and encourage all of you in the NYS GIS community to be thinking of potential candidates for the 2011 awards.
